In Memoriam - Evangelos Dialynas

Professor Evangelos Dialynas, aged 73, passed away peacefully on 26th July 2025.

Evangelos Dialynas graduated from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) receiving his Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 1975. He continued his studies at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Great Britain and completed his   MSc Degree in1976, in the area of the Analysis and Control of Electric Power Systems. He continued his scientific research on the Reliability Analysis and Evaluation of Electric Power Supply Systems at UMIST, that led to the award of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 1979.

In 1985 he started his teaching and research activities, as professor, in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NTUA. For a long period, he served as Director of the Electric Energy Systems Laboratory and Director of the Postgraduate Program “Energy Production and Management” at NTUA.

In parallel he served as member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Transmission System Operator (2000 – 2004) and as member of the Board of the Regulatory Authority for Energy of Greece in Greece (2012 – 2014). He was an elected member of the Scientific Committee for Electrical Engineering of the Technical Chamber of Greece and a senior member of IEEE. As a result of his research and teaching activities, he has written four books, more than 80 peer-reviewed papers published in international technical journals and more than 130 proceedings papers presented in various international conferences. Additionally, he has written more than 120 technical reports and other technical documents.

He was a member of CIGRE since 1985 and a Distinguished member since 2002, participating in the activities of several Study Committees. He served as the Chairman of the Greek National Committee (2000 -2004) and member of the Greek NC Board since 1988. He also served as member of the CIGRE Administrative Council representing Greece (2006-2018). His contribution to the development of CIGRE in Greece is invaluable.

Professor Dialynas was respected and admired by everybody who had the chance to meet him and cooperate with him. A true gentleman, always cheerful and pleasant. Very much a family man, he leaves a son and a daughter, talented scientists.

Especially for us, the death of Evangelos is a loss of a fellow, a true friend and a teacher at the National Technical University of Athens and for many years a CIGRE colleague. We will truly miss him and shall always remember him with great respect.
