Silver Corrosion in Transformers – Studies on a relatively recently observed phenomenon in power transformers

Silver corrosion has emerged as a growing concern for power transformers, with recent cases involving both mineral oils and synthetic esters highlighting limitations in existing testing methods. This article presents recent field experience and examines the challenges of detecting corrosive sulphur compounds. It also introduces the work of CIGRE JWG D1/A2.84, which aims to improve testing methods and develop practical guidance for risk assessment, remedial actions and long-term mitigation.
