Micro substations – Facilitating faster Grid Access

The acceleration of electrification and the emergence of new, localized loads are challenging conventional approaches to grid connection and substation design. In parallel, large portions of the global population still lack reliable access to electricity, particularly in remote or weakly interconnected areas.
This article introduces the micro substation as a compact, transmission-connected solution enabled by recent advances in high-voltage voltage transformer technology. It discusses the technical principles of connection, insulation, protection, and metering, and outlines how micro substations can complement existing network architectures by enabling controlled power extraction from transmission lines for both emerging applications and electricity access initiatives.
