Power Quality Analytics in Modern Electrical Power Systems

The electrical power system is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Renewable energy sources, distributed generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), electric vehicles (EVs), Data Centres and power-electronic converters are becoming integral components of modern electricity networks. At the same time, advanced communication, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital technologies are transforming conventional utilities into intelligent, data-driven energy systems. These developments are essential for improving the reliability, security, efficiency, and sustainability of electricity supply and for supporting global carbon-reduction and net-zero objectives. However, they also introduce new power quality (PQ) challenges. The increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs), EVs, and rapidly varying loads can produce disturbances that affect both the power system and the equipment connected to it.

This section features strategic articles from CIGRE authors on technologies, practices, and innovations shaping the future power system as One Grid—an integrated end-to-end system across transmission and distribution. It also includes invited articles approved by the Electra Editorial Board, which may express opinions solely their own, to broaden perspectives on the technological evolution of the grid.
