President of CIGRE

Dear CIGRE Colleagues,

Welcome to the June 2022 issue of Electra.

It looks as though we are finally on the backside of the global pandemic. Live, in-person meetings are taking place again such as the very successful CIGRE Kyoto Symposium and IEEE-PES conference in the USA.
We are now seeing a good uptake in inscriptions for this Summer’s session - similar to what we had in 2018 - and the exhibition spaces are fully booked.

The CIGRE Steering Committee has just had its first physical meeting in Zurich after a pause of two and a half years. Being able to meet again, face-to-face, permitted us all to have much deeper exchanges, and make much more headway in our discussions.

This edition of ELECTRA offers very good updates on many subjects: annual reports from SGs B3, B4, and B5; many Technical Brochures; a full update from The CIGRE Kyoto Symposium; a report from the CIGRE Ordinary General Assembly; several articles in Life in the Association, as well as the list of 2022 Distinguished Member Awards, and Technical Distinction Awards.

There is a very interesting article about the HVDC project in Chile; and interview with KVS Baba, the founder and CMD of POSOCO; and an important article for everyone to read: ‘A Season of High Energy Prices in Europe’. We are all concerned about the rising energy prices and, of course, what we can do technically and from a market and planning point of view to mitigate this issue. After all, what we strive to do is to make energy transmission as efficient and economical as possible so the challenges ahead, with what will hopefully soon just be the aftermath of the war in Ukraine, is as always of utmost importance.

Please also see the update on this Summer’s Paris Session from Philippe Adam, and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible this August in person!

Cordially,
Michel Augonnet
